FreeCORE-15.1-STABLE — release candidate.

15.1 RC8

FreeCORE-15.1-RC8 · 3 changes · release candidate

Not for production. It clears the same TrueNAS CORE 13.3 suite as every FreeCORE release, but its new features have not been run in anger yet: run it where you can afford to reinstall, and report what breaks.

added
ApplicationsA declared port can stay on the managed network without being published on the host. Other applications reach it at the application's address on the managed bridge; the install and edit forms offer it per port.
ApplicationsA system certificate can be mounted into an application. In the install or edit form, choose a certificate from System > Certificates and a directory in the container; the application finds cert.pem, chain.pem, fullchain.pem and privkey.pem there, read-only. The files are kept in memory, never on the pool, and belong to the user the image runs as unless another is set. A renewal updates them and restarts a running application, unless that is turned off for the certificate. A certificate an application uses cannot be deleted.
changed
CertificatesDeleting a certificate issued through ACME works again; it stopped with an internal error when the certificate was revoked.

15.1 RC7

FreeCORE-15.1-RC7 · 16 changes · release candidate

Not for production. It clears the same TrueNAS CORE 13.3 suite as every FreeCORE release, but its new features have not been run in anger yet: run it where you can afford to reinstall, and report what breaks.

added
SystemSystem > Update offers Move to TrueNAS SCALE, a guided move: it checks the system first, names any pool that TrueNAS SCALE could not import read-write, then fetches the TrueNAS SCALE 24.04 update from iXsystems' update server and installs it in place. The FreeCORE boot environment stays in the boot menu.
ApplicationsUser-defined container labels. Labels can be set when an application is installed or edited, catalog entries can declare their own, and Export for Linux carries them into the Compose bundle. Names beginning with io.freecore. are reserved.
Web interfaceThe web interface offers a Swedish translation.
changed
InstallerThe installer creates the boot pool with 4 KiB sectors (ashift 12), as TrueNAS SCALE does; a boot device with larger logical sectors keeps its own.
Active DirectoryLeaving a domain uses the system's Kerberos credential cache, as TrueNAS SCALE does, and removes the computer account from the domain.
SyslogSyslog-ng polls with kqueue again, as on TrueNAS CORE 13.3, and kernel messages reach /var/log/messages.
Base systemThe iXsystems NVDIMM driver (ixnvdimm) and the M-series NVDIMM alerts that used it are removed. FreeBSD's nvdimm(4) driver stays.
PackagesSecurity and maintenance updates to bundled software: Samba 4.24.7, Apache 2.4.69, OpenLDAP 2.6.15, the root certificate bundle (NSS 3.130), jq 1.8.2, Beautiful Soup 4.15.0, and Podman 5.8.6 with ocijail 0.6.1, conmon 2.2.1, Buildah 1.43.2 and Skopeo 1.22.2.
Base systemA process with many shared libraries no longer risks corrupting its own memory the first time it starts another program: the runtime linker takes upstream FreeBSD's fix for this (PR 295991) in place of FreeCORE's larger spawn stack.
SMBThe share list can be browsed again while any user is marked as a Microsoft Account.
SMBChanging a user's Microsoft Account setting takes effect without restarting SMB.
JailsA DHCP VNET jail gets its address when a virtual machine on the same interface started first.
ApplicationsExport for Linux no longer stops on an application with annotations, such as the catalog's Jellyfin.
ApplicationsA refused catalog install names the field and the reason instead of returning an internal error.
ConfigurationSave Configuration for TrueNAS SCALE carries the OpenVPN settings exactly as TrueNAS CORE 13.3 stored them, and the README files it and Export for Linux write describe the way back that exists.
RollbackThe return point captured by an in-place move from TrueNAS CORE names the boot environment the system came from even when the system clock was wrong at installation.

15.1 RC6

FreeCORE-15.1-RC6 · 25 changes · release candidate

Not for production. It clears the same TrueNAS CORE 13.3 suite as every FreeCORE release, but its new features have not been run in anger yet: run it where you can afford to reinstall, and report what breaks.

added
ApplicationsA LAN-attached network mode. An application can take its own address on the LAN through the bridge the iocage jails use, and can keep a second address on the Applications bridge to reach the managed applications. Each installed row shows its LAN and bridge addresses.
ApplicationsExport for Linux on each installed application writes a Docker Compose bundle with a copy of the application's data, for a Linux Docker or Compose host. The export checks the free space first.
ConfigurationSave Configuration can write a file for moving to TrueNAS SCALE: the configuration in the form a TrueNAS SCALE installation accepts, with a README that lists each pool's ZFS features and the TrueNAS release that can import the pool.
ApplicationsCatalog entries carry their provider's icons, and the image ships the current Daemonless catalog, so a fresh installation lists the catalog with its icons before the first Update Catalog.
Convert & ImportMore recipes. The remaining single-volume recipes are complete, applications whose data spans several volumes or keeps a configuration file outside its data directory can be converted, and n8n, Mealie, NocoDB, Heimdall and code-server convert from a Linux source.
changed
Web interfaceThe web interface completes its move onto the modernized shell: the tabs, sliders, Pools panels, top bar, sidebar, page layout, job list, sign-in page and the remaining form controls. Pages keep their places and their behavior.
Sign-inSign-in failures are shown on the sign-in form instead of in a pop-up message.
StorageThe pool manager asks for confirmation before Force is turned on.
DashboardThe Dashboard's Pool card marks a pool that is 80% full or more on its usage line, instead of repeating the figure on a second row.
ApplicationsProvider icons drawn for light backgrounds are outlined on the dark themes.
ApplicationsA managed application keeps its address on the Applications bridge across restarts.
FreeBSD baseIncorporates the FreeBSD 15.1-RELEASE-p4 security and errata corrections: SA-26:64 through SA-26:69, EN-26:23 and EN-26:24.
PackagesSecurity and maintenance updates to bundled software: nginx 1.30.5, OpenVPN 2.6.23, rsync 3.5.1, Python 3.12, popt, AsyncSSH, PyJWT, urllib3, AnyIO, typing-extensions, GitPython and soupsieve, and the Intel CPU microcode.
JailsPlugin jails created on an earlier release start again: the start path accepts manifests that store booleans and numbers as strings.
Virtual machinesThe QEMU Guest Agent accepts the filesystem freeze commands, so hypervisor backups of a FreeCORE guest no longer log freeze errors.
ApplicationsUpdate Catalog fetches the new compose file of a reviewed entry, so a new release of an application installs; an upgraded system kept the compose files of its first catalog instead.
ApplicationsA catalog entry in a newer provider format is no longer marked unavailable because of documentation fields the reader does not know.
Convert & ImportThe Jellyfin and qBittorrent recipes no longer accept the LinuxServer or hotio images, whose data layout differs; a Linux bundle's data may sit inside a mounted directory; and a :latest Linux source takes its version from the image label.
ReplicationReplication with a speed limit works again: it failed with "throttle: not found" and now limits through mbuffer.
AccountsAccounts with the SFTP-only shell scponly can log in again.
Cloud SyncThe OneDrive drive list works again; it is read through Microsoft Graph.
DebugThe debug bundle records boot environments with bectl and enclosures with sesutil instead of failing those sections.
GraphicsThe image ships the GPU firmware that 13.3 shipped for the Intel, AMD and Radeon graphics drivers.
SMBWS-Discovery (wsdd) parses network XML with its hardened parser again.
SystemThe GUI SSL Certificate setting shows the certificate's name instead of its number when the list loads late.

15.1 RC5

FreeCORE-15.1-RC5 · 12 changes · release candidate

Not for production. It clears the same TrueNAS CORE 13.3 suite as every FreeCORE release, but its new features have not been run in anger yet: run it where you can afford to reinstall, and report what breaks.

added
BastilleStart, Stop and Restart on each Bastille jail row — the same controls the iocage rows beside them have.
ApplicationsThe store can be unconfigured from the interface. Keep-data is the default; without it, orphaned application data is removed with the store.
Virtual machinesOn a QEMU/KVM guest, the Guest Agent switches itself on when the host offers a guest-agent channel, so a fresh FreeCORE guest reports to its host without a manual service change.
changed
Web interfaceThe interface moves onto the modernized shell: one surface ladder and icon set, buttons in three tiers, uniform tables, dialogs, menus and forms, and a compact login. Pages keep their places and their behavior — the same interface on one visual system, not a reorganization.
DashboardCompact cards of uniform width and height: the pools in one Pools card, plain counts for the facts, and a Guests card that keeps its frame and aggregates a family that does not fit.
ApplicationsThe catalog is a picker row with a tile strip, in the shape 13.3 gave Plugins, and Install opens its form in place under the strip instead of at the bottom of the page. Installed applications are a table in the Jails shape: the same row actions in the row expander, lower-case state words, declared runtime health beside the state.
Base systemThe unused Netgraph userland (ngctl, nghook, flowctl and libnetgraph) is removed from the image; it shipped without a kernel side to talk to.
UpdateSelecting the 15.1 train from 15.0 works again: the obsolete GRUB admission gates are removed from the update validator and the ISO check, so the switch is no longer refused before it starts.
ReportingThe laundry memory graph and the ARC metadata-miss counters have their collectors back, and the charts keep their proportions, complete axis labels and place on the normal page scroller.
VM web consoleThe extra-keys panel shows its Ctrl, Alt, Windows, Tab, Esc and Ctrl-Alt-Del buttons again instead of six empty rings.
JailsA FreeBSD release that download.freebsd.org has withdrawn is fetched from archive.freebsd.org instead, so a 13.x jail can be created again.
UpdateThe "Remove Captured Return" job dialog closes itself when the removal succeeds, instead of staying open with no Close button.

15.1 RC4

FreeCORE-15.1-RC4 · 7 changes · release candidate

Not for production. It clears the same TrueNAS CORE 13.3 suite as every FreeCORE release, but its new features have not been run in anger yet: run it where you can afford to reinstall, and report what breaks.

added
Virtual machinesA disk or raw file can be attached in NVMe mode beside AHCI and VirtIO, and a host directory can be shared into a guest as a Shared Directory (virtio-9p) device. The NVMe emulation is given the disk's sector size.
changed
Applicationspodman run as root on the host finds the Applications store without any environment, so ps, exec, logs and inspect see the managed containers as they are.
IPMI alertsIPMI System Event alerts work again. Since 15.0 the alert source rejected every record in the system event log, because ipmitool 1.8.19 prints the time with a zone name where 1.8.18 printed it bare; no hardware event became an alert, and the middleware log filled with one warning per record every five minutes. Timestamps are read in UTC as before, so events dismissed before the update stay dismissed.
BastilleA VNET jail created with the CLI ran with an undefined devfs ruleset and saw the whole host /dev; the image now defines the ruleset the jails are created with.
BastilleThe CLI's data-pool pointer is rendered with the rc configuration and verified with it, so an upgrade no longer leaves the CLI unaware of the configured pool, and the jib helper that starts a VNET jail is part of the image instead of appearing only after the first create.
BastilleThe Releases view lists its rows again.
ApplicationsThe Logs panel shows the container output without escape codes, and the name fields carry a pattern the browser accepts.

15.1 RC3

FreeCORE-15.1-RC3 · 7 changes · release candidate

Not for production. It clears the same TrueNAS CORE 13.3 suite as every FreeCORE release, but its new features have not been run in anger yet: run it where you can afford to reinstall, and report what breaks.

added
ApplicationsAn installed application can be edited in place: Edit reopens the review form with the installed ports, environment values, storage mappings and restart policy, and replaces the container without pulling a new image. Each volume says what its change means for the app-owned dataset behind it, the Remove dialog lists the datasets it decides about, and the Installed tab lists app-owned data nothing maps, with a delete that names every dataset.
ApplicationsA Shell action on a running application opens a shell inside its container, on the same page as the jail console.
changed
ApplicationsThe reviewed version is the version the image itself states, not the provider index's quarterly package field; when only the index could be read, the value says so.
arcstatzarcstat and zarcsummary are installed under their upstream names; arcstat and arc_summary remain as links beside them.
InstallerOffered on every console at the same time: the display and the serial port both show the menu, whichever the firmware lists first. It ran on the primary console alone before, so a serial-console install of a UEFI virtual machine never saw the menu on a 15.0-U1.5 host. One console installs at a time; the second is told an installation is already running.
ApplicationsThe Import image and Convert jail panels open in view instead of rendering below the whole catalog and looking inert.
filefile(1) no longer prints "Duplicate magic entry" warnings on every call: the compiled magic database is back in the image.

15.1 RC2

FreeCORE-15.1-RC2 · 24 changes · release candidate

Not for production. It clears the same TrueNAS CORE 13.3 suite as every FreeCORE release, but its new features have not been run in anger yet: run it where you can afford to reinstall, and report what breaks.

added
ApplicationsReads the Daemonless organisation directly: a reviewed entry is bound to the SHA-256 of its compose file, updates follow the provider's package versions, and any other image installs only through the acknowledged unreviewed tier. The RC1 signed catalog snapshot is retired.
Convert & ImportExperimental: lifts an iocage or Bastille jail into a native application, offers recipe-based migrations for known workloads, and imports a compose file.
Linux imagesExperimental and off by default: an opt-in tier runs Linux container images through FreeBSD's Linux binary compatibility.
Emulated guestsaarch64 and riscv64 virtual machines run on QEMU beside the native bhyve ones. Usable, and slow. The matching user-mode emulators are installed and registered with the kernel's image activator.
ApplicationsCan be unconfigured: the store and its runtime are removed, and a cascading export or destroy of its pool does the same.
WireGuardPeers report last handshake and transfer counters.
Bastille releasesThe releases on disk are listed in the web interface.
arcstatarcstat and arc_summary are back, as on TrueNAS CORE 13.3.
changed
BastilleThe web interface observes jails and the CLI manages them: creating, configuring and deleting return to bastille, which finds the pool selected in the web interface, including after a reboot.
JailsOne Jails link in the sidebar again; Bastille is reached from the Jails page.
QEMU Guest AgentRegistered as a managed service; refuses to start where the host offers no guest channel.
GuestsBastille jails are their own family on the dashboard card, with the addresses they hold and their disk usage; the applications it counts are named.
ApplicationsThe page inspects every container in two calls instead of two per application; a crash-looping application reads RESTARTING; the last application on an image takes the image with it and a prune removes the rest; a catalog entry whose image tag or compose file is missing upstream shows that condition instead of AVAILABLE.
StorageOnce Applications is configured, the Storage page, the dashboard and middleware start no longer walk the application image layers; each is several times faster.
API documentationServed from the system itself, and describes API-key authentication.
SMBShares whose VFS objects include noacl accept client connections again; the module no longer fails to load.
Web interfaceThe Shell and jail consoles no longer clip the bottom of each line, so underscores and descenders show, and open once their font has loaded; a sidebar submenu click no longer hangs the interface.
Virtual machinesFixes UEFI guests booting to the serial console instead of the display, VIRTIO guests with more than one disk failing to start, the web console when VNC is bound to all addresses, and bhyve forcing a VM exit on every guest PAUSE instruction.
iocageSees its activated pool and its jails again while Applications is configured; basejail upgrades across major releases work again.
ApplicationsA volume created for an application is owned by it, a failed install keeps its traceback, installing scrolls the review into view, and the row says which health it reports.
Jail removalDeleting an iocage jail that is still held reports what holds it.
rar2fsStarts after the pools are imported.
Provenanceuname -v names the FreeCORE 15.1 build, and the source manifest the image was built from is readable at /etc/repo-manifest.
DashboardThe Memory card states its ECC status as text, the Update card sizes to its content, and alert severity labels no longer crowd their icon.

Web interfaceThe web interface moves to the 15.1 codebase (Angular 22). The plugin store and the 15.0 virtual machine pages stay; pages that only 15.1 has, such as Applications, are not part of 15.0. A Swedish translation is offered.
PythonThe system Python moves from 3.11 to 3.12, as on 15.1. A script that calls python3.11 by path needs to call python3 instead.
JailsJails and plugins run on iocage 1.13, the base 15.1 uses. The plugin store and plugin jails stay.
CertificatesSystem > ACME DNS offers Cloudflare, DigitalOcean, OVHcloud and Shell alongside Amazon Route 53, as on 15.1.
Active DirectoryLeaving an Active Directory domain uses the system's Kerberos credential cache, as TrueNAS SCALE does, and removes the computer account from the domain.
Base systemThe iXsystems NVDIMM driver (ixnvdimm) and the M-series NVDIMM alerts that used it are removed. FreeBSD's nvdimm(4) driver stays.
PackagesSecurity and maintenance updates to bundled software: Samba 4.24.7, Apache 2.4.69, OpenLDAP 2.6.15, the root certificate bundle (NSS 3.130), jq 1.8.2 and Beautiful Soup 4.15.0.
CertificatesDeleting a certificate issued through ACME works again; it stopped with an internal error when the certificate was revoked.
RollbackThe return point captured by an in-place move from TrueNAS CORE names the boot environment the system came from even when the system clock was wrong at installation.

syslog-ngSyslog-ng polls with kqueue again, as on TrueNAS CORE 13.3; earlier 15.0 updates ran it on ppoll.
GraphicsThe image ships the GPU firmware set that 13.3 shipped for the Intel, AMD and Radeon graphics drivers.
PackagesSecurity and maintenance updates to bundled software: rsync 3.5.1, nginx 1.30.5, OpenVPN 2.6.23, popt, AsyncSSH, PyJWT, urllib3, AnyIO, typing-extensions, GitPython and soupsieve, and the Intel CPU microcode.
JailsIocage console runs the jail on its own terminal, so a process in the jail cannot inject input into the administrator's host terminal.
Web interfaceTwo unused or obsolete web-interface dependencies with published advisories are removed.
ReplicationReplication with a speed limit works again: it failed with "throttle: not found" and now limits through mbuffer.
AccountsAccounts with the SFTP-only shell scponly can log in again.
ReportingThe laundry memory graph and the ARC metadata-miss counters have their collectors back.
ShellA Shell, jail console or VM serial console session closes when the program in it exits, instead of staying open on a dead terminal.
Cloud SyncThe OneDrive drive list works again; it is read through Microsoft Graph.
SMBWS-Discovery (wsdd) parses network XML with its hardened parser again.
DebugThe debug bundle records boot environments with bectl and enclosures with sesutil instead of failing those sections.
Web interfacePages that follow live data stop their subscriptions when they close, the Network summary no longer raises errors while it loads, and a missing build date no longer stops the interface from starting.
UpdateThe return-window status reads the arrival state the updater writes.
